Back to School Safety Tips

3G Properties Group - Sunday, August 24, 2014

Pencils, backpacks, glue; smiles, nervousness and excitement; these are the days of back to school here in Texas. Most schools in the Dallas Fort Worth area begin the school year on August 25, 2014 and 3G Properties wants to pass on some tips for children, parents and the public on road safety as well as school safety.

Parents:

Dress your children appropriately for school. Check your school district policies for children’s attire. No one likes to get a call that their child isn’t dressed appropriately and they are missing class because they have been sent to the office.

Buy a backpack that is light weight and colorful so your child can be seen and is easy to walk or ride their bikes with. Some kids also have started to carry messenger bags and roll along backpacks so the weight isn’t hurting their backs.

Send your child with a cell phone for emergency purposes ONLY. You never know when your child needs their parent but remember to tell them that during the day to give their phone to their teacher or store it in their locker so they are not disrupted during class.

Teach your children the “ways of the road.” Kids need to know cycling hand signals, how to use crosswalks appropriately and how to not talk to strangers no matter what.

Most importantly teach your children the importance of nutrition at school. Whether you send your child with a lunch or they purchase a school lunch, encourage them to eat their fruits and vegetables, drink milk or water rather than soda and skip on the sugary snacks.

Parents remember that in September 2013 expands the current limitations on wireless communication device (cell phone) use in an active school crossing zone to include the property of a public elementary, middle, or junior high school for which a local authority has designated a school crossing zone. The use will only be restricted during the time a reduced speed limit is in effect for the school crossing zone. Further, it will not apply to vehicles that are stopped, or drivers using a hands-free device or making an emergency call.  If in doubt, hang up the phone!

Children:

OBEY your parents! Listen to the safety tips your parents give you.

Eat nutritious food and drink lots of water.

Listen to your teachers, coaches and authorities.

Have a great school year!
